Smith, Rose account for 8 hits in 9-6 victory
PHILADELPHIA (AP) – The Philadelphia Phillies scored seven runs in the first inning, two on major league leader Mike Schmidt's 19th home run, and held on to beat the San Diego Padres 9-6 last night.
The first seven Philadelphia batters got base hits. The victim of the assault was lefthander Randy Jones. 4-6. who left after five runs with an aggravated rib cage muscle pull.
Pete Rose, who singled home the first run of the game, collected four hits in the game and moved past Honus Wagner on the all-time major league hit list into fifth place with 3,431. The 39-year-old Rose also moved past Wagner for third place in the National League behind only Stan Musial and Hank Aaron.
Rookie Lonnie Smith also had four hits and scored two runs in the Phillies' 15-hit attack against four San Diego pitchers. The Padres dropped their fifth straight and 14th of the last 17 games.
Dick Ruthven, 6-5, got the victory although he gave up five runs and nine hits in 6⅔ innings before injuring himself while fielding a bunt. Ron Reed finished the game.
Smith started the Phillies' biggest inning of the season with a single, stole second and scored on Rose's hit Schmidt then hit his homer. Greg Luzinski and Bob Boone singled Boone taking second on the throw to third and Garry Maddox singled them home. Maddox scored on a triple by Larry Bowa, who scored on Manny Trillo sacrifice fly.
San Diego got a run on an RBI single by Fred Kendall in the second and two more runs in the third on singles by Gene Richards and Ossie Smith, two grounders and a single by Willie Montanez.
The Phillies made it 8-3 in the fourth on hits by Rose and Schmidt and a sacrifice fly by Boone, but the Padres picked up two more in the sixth. Dave Winfield doubled, Jerry Mumphrey walked and both scored when pinch-hitter Bill Fahey singled.
Lonnie Smith's double, completing his first major league four-hit game, and Rose's fourth single made it 9-5 after six. The Padres added their sixth run in the eighth inning as Dave Cash grounded into a double play after a double by Montanez and a single by Mumphrey.
