June 22, 1980

Oftentimes, a team's ace is referred to as the streak-breaker.  It is expected that, no matter how badly a team has been playing, it's ace can step up, put the team on his back, and carry them to victory - at least on that day.  Steve Carlton was that on this third and final game of the Phils' series in San Francisco.  Carlton had one bad inning, giving up three run and five hits in the fourth inning, but Carlton cruised the rest of the way, allowing the Phils' offense to come back and take the final match.  Mike Schmidt scored two runs and knocked in two more while hitting a triple as part of a 2-for-5 effort.
