Hendrick HR in 10th defeats Phillies, 1-0
ST. LOUIS (AP) – George Hendrick lined a home run over the left-field wall with one out in the 10th inning yesterday to give the St. Louis Cardinals a 1-0 triumph over the Philadelphia Phillies.
Bob Sykes. 3-6, scattered eight hits for his first shutout in the National League. Sykes struck out three and walked one.
Hendrick's homer, his 17th of the season, came off Kevin Saucier, 3-3. It was only the third hit of the game for the Cardinals.
Nino Espinosa, making his first start of the season for the Phillies after being hampered by bursitis in his pitching shoulder, allowed only two hits and one walk over the first eight innings.
Philadelphia's best scoring opportunity came in the eighth inning. Pete Rose hit a two-out single and Greg Luzinski followed with a looping double to right, but Rose was thrown out trying to score on the hit by St. Louis rightfielder Leon Durham.
Meanwhile, Mike Schmidt of the Phillies, the National League's leader in home runs, may be forced to sit out next week's All-Star game due to a pulled hamstring.
"Mike wants very much to be a part of it," Phillies Manager Dallas Green said yesterday. "He doesn't want to miss it. But, at the same time, if he's not able there's not much we can do."
The 31-year-old Schmidt, who has 21 homers, injured his left leg during last Saturday's doubleheader against the New York Mets.
He played briefly Monday and Tuesday in games against the Montreal Expos, but was benched afterward for Philadelphia's next four games.
Green said the decision on whether the third baseman will be available will be made before winding up the Phils five-game series against the Cardinals this weekend.
If Schmidt is unable to play in the All-Star contest, it is likely that Ray Knight of the Cincinnati Reds will take his place on the NL roster. Ken Reitz of the Cardinals is the other NL third baseman.
"With a hamstring injury, about all you can do is rest." said Green. "We may just decide to sit him down."
