Imagine a series in which the Phils only get three extra base hits, all doubles. And imagine a series like that with the Phils sweeping the three games. That's exactly what happened against San Francisco. For the third straight game, the Phils got one extra base hit, today a double by starting pitcher Dick Ruthven. They did, however, do the little things well, such as the Larry Bowa suicide squeeze that increased the Phils' lead to 4-0. At the time it seemed to be a little unnecessary, but that fourth run turned out to be the difference in the game as the Giants came back to make the score 4-3. Ruthven pitched well, but tired in the ninth inning and gave up a two-run homer to Giant pinch-hitter Chris Bourjos before giving way to Tug McGraw, who got the final two outs to preserve Ruthven's 14th win and earn his 16th save. Along with Bowa's squeeze, Mike Schmidt and Ruthven each had RBIs, and Manny Trillo scored two runs in being the only Phil to have a multiple hit game (2-for-4).
