Mets’ Bomback beats Phils for 2nd time

NEW YORK (AP) – Mark Bomback tossed a two-hitter, and Dan Norman singled home a run in the fourth inning to help the New York Mets to a 2-0 victory over the Philadelphia Phillies last night.

Bomback, 2-0, recorded his second successive victory over the Phillies and pitched his first major league shutout. Randy Lerch, 0-3, and Dickie Noles held the Mets to four hits.

John Stearns doubled to lead off the Mets' fourth inning. After Jerry Morales grounded out, Norman lined a single to center to score Stearns from third.

The Mets scored an unearned run in the eighth. With two out. Morales reached on an error by third baseman Mike Schmidt. Morales stole second and scored on an error by shortstop Larry Bowa on Norman's grounder.

Bomback struck out two and walked six in pitching the Mets' first complete game of the season.

Bomback, who appeared in two games for the Milwaukee Brewers in 1978, issued a pair of walks to open the sixth inning, but he retired the side on three pitches by getting Pete Rose to hit into a double play and inducing Bake McBride to pop out.

Bomback allowed a leadoff single by Schmidt in the second inning and another leadoff single to Garry Maddox in the seventh. Maddox stole second, but Bomback retired the Phillies without a ball being hit out of the infield.

Although he issued three of his six walks in the final two innings, Bomback threw only 27 pitches to get the final six outs. Two walks came with two out in the eighth and McBride hit an inning-ending ground ball.

In the ninth, Greg Luzinski walked with two outs, but Boone grounded into a game-ending forceout at second base.
