Reds have chances, but Walk tough in clutch

 

PHILADELPHIA (AP) – Mike Schmidt drove in the winning run with a bases-loaded sacrifice fly in the sixth inning last night, lifting the Philadelphia Phillies to a 3-1 victory over the Cincinnati Reds. 

 

Schmidt drove in Lonnie Smith to snap a 1-1 tie and . collect his eighth game-winning RBI. Smith and Pete Rose singled before Reds starter lefthander Charlie Leibrandt, 9-7, hit Bake McBride to load the bases. 

 

The Reds, who left 10 men on base through the first six innings, couldn't capitalize against Phillies rookie righthander Bob Walk, 8-1. The 23-year old righthander threw 90 pitches and walked four in the first four innings, but escaped with only one run against him. 

 

The Phillies scored in the second when catcher Keith Moreland singled and took second on a fielder's choice before scoring on Manny Trillo's sharp single to left. 

 

The Reds got even in the fourth, when Leibrandt singled home Ron Oester, who had tripled. Dave Collins followed with a single but he and Leibrandt were left on base when Ray Knight flied to center. 

 

Smith doubled in the eighth and scored again when Bake McBride singled up the middle. McBride, who has -hit in eight straight games at a .500 clip, has 62 RBI, a career high. 

 

The Reds placed runners in scoring position in each of the first three innings as Walk endured control problems. 

 

But in the first, with Collins on third and one out. Ken Griffey got caught in a rundown between first and second and the Reds were unable to score. 

 

In the second, Dave Concepcion singled and stole second, but was stranded as Oester struck out and Leibrandt popped out.

 

The Reds loaded the bases in the third, but Johnny Bench grounded into a force play.
