August 10, 1980 - Game 2 - Pittsburgh 4, Phillies 1

Pete Rose and Mike Schmidt look on glumly as the Pirates complete the sweep.
Pete Rose and Mike Schmidt look on glumly as the Pirates complete the sweep.

Green's tirade between the games of this double header did not have an immediate effect, as the Phils' bats remained silent in the second game of this Sunday afternoon doubleheader. Other than a Bake McBride homer in the seventh inning, the Phils failed to put a runner across home plate. The putrid offensive showing undermined a decent pitching performance by Dan Larson, who pitched five innings and gave up two runs, one earned, on three hits. Relievers Ron Reed and Tug McGraw gave up a run each in their innings of work. This loss put the Phils at their lowest point of the season at 55-52, in third place six games behind the Expos and Pirates, who were now tied for first place. Those who had often seen the Phillies melt from contention during the hot days of August may well have given up hope at this point.
