Phillies Start Training

CLEARWATER, Fla. (AP) – The Philadelphia Phillies officially begin their 34th year of spring training at 10:30 a.m. here Tuesday.

A couple of dozen Phillies worked out in cold weather Monday, the last day of informal workouts.

Forty roster players and six minor league players are expected to take the field Tuesday.

Three players – Greg Gross Lonnie Smith and Dickie Noles – called Monday to say they didn’t know when they would be arriving because of a snow storm that hit the Carolinas over the weekend.

In addition, catcher Bob Boone, the National League player representative, will also miss opening day because of an executive board meeting of the Major League Baseball Players Association in Tampa.
