Manny Trillo is congratulated after knocking in the winning run in the 15th inning.

This is one of the first games I can remember disobeying my mother's orders to go to sleep in order to listen to baseball on my old transistor radio (the kind with one earplug to listen to the AM station. I believe that the game was on KYW 1060am back then, and the signal was just a little fuzzy on my transistor in Honey Brook. My heart sank as the Phils, who had coughed up a 3-2 lead, fell behind 5-3 in the top of the 15th inning against the Cubs, as Dickie Noles gave up two unearned runs (based on his own throwing error). Today I would probably turn off the TV (and satellite dish) in disgust, but the innocence of youth kept me glued to the radio. And I was richly rewarded! The Comeback Kids pulled off one of their first late-season miracles, a three-run bottom of the 15th inning that pulled out the win against the Cubs. With two outs and a run in that inning, Garry Maddox singled to tie the game, Keith Moreland singled and Larry Bowa walked to load the bases, and Manny Trillo singled to steal the game that was seemingly lost. Larry Christenson started the game and gave up three runs in 6-1/3 innings. Christenson was followed by a plethora of pitchers: Tug McGraw (2-2/3 IP), Ron Reed (2/3 IP), Sparky Lyle (2-1/3 IP), Warren Brusstar (2 IP), Noles (1/3 IP) and Kevin Saucier (2/3 IP), who finished the 15th inning and won his 7th decision. Pete Rose had three RBI for the Phillies- all they had in the first 14 innings of the game. As well as knocking in the winning run, Manny Trillo scored two more for the Phils.

From "The World Champion Phillies and the Road to Victory"

For some unknown reason, the Phillies and Cubs have really been involved in some dillies. Most of them occurred in Wrigley Field, including a key 8-5, 15-inning win by the Phillies right after they had lost four in a row in Pittsburgh in early August.

The two clubs went 15 innings again and the Phillies came up with their biggest victory of the season, a definite Comeback Kids patent - scoring three runs in their last at bat to win.

Trailing 3-2, the Phillies rallied to tie on Pete Rose's grounder in the seventh.

The Cubs broke the ice in the 15th,. Pitcher Lynn McGlothen was sent up as a pinch hitter and drew a walk from Dickie Noles. Following an out, Noles threw a potential double play ground ball into center field, putting runners on the corners.

Scot Thompson hit a sacrifice fly off Kevin Saucier and Carlos Lezcano followed with a two-run double (note: only one run scored on the double).

With a handful of rowdy fans in the stands, the Phillies themselves became rowdy.

Doug Capilla walked Lonnie Smith and Rose to start the inning. Each advanced on a wild pitch. Smith scored on Bake McBride's grounder to second.

Dennis Lamp came in to pitch to Mike Schmidt, who popped up to second base. Garry Maddox got his biggest hit of the season as he lined a 1-1 pitch to center scoring Rose wth the tying run.

Keith Moreland followed with a single and Larry Bowa walked on four pitches to load the bases.

Manny Trillo lined a game-winning single to center and the Phillies had won a very important game to stay on the heels of the Expos, a half-game out.
