The Cards' Leon Durham is congragulated at home plate after blasing a grand slam in the 5th.

The Redbirds came to Philadelphia and promptly took care of business in the first game of this doubleheader, chasing Bob Walk in the fifth inning, smacking him around for four runs on nine hits. The big blow of the game was off the bat of Leon Durham, who hit a grand slam off of Warren Brusstar (one of Walk's runners and two left by Dickie Noles), which put the game out of reach, even though the Phils would score four runs in the later innings. Lefty Mark Davis (1989 Cy Young winner as a closer for the San Diego Padres) made his major league debut for the Phillies. Coupled with a Montreal win, this game left the Phils 1½ games behind the Expos going into the second half of the doubleheader.
