How Obtained:  Acquired from San Francisco for Willie Montanez, 5/4/75.

1979 Season:  Continued his fielding brilliance and was awarded with his fifth consecutive Gold Glove; he is the first Phillies outfielder to win a Gold Glove and has been a Gold Glove winner in the five seasons he has played with the Phillies...  Finished season hitting .338 in the month of September...  Tied Cardinals' Tony Scott for second in Total Chances among NL outfielders (448); Omar Moreno was the leader (514); Maddox played in 140 games, Scott (151), Moreno (162); Was second behind Houston's Terry Puhl for fewest errors among outfielders who played 140 or more games; Puhl had none in 152 games; Maddox made two miscues in 140...  13 HR was one behind his career high 14 in 1977...  Had four hits in a game three times...  Led Phillies in Stolen Bases with 26.

Career:  Led NL outfielders in TC in 1978 and was third in 1977...  Originally the property of the San Francisco Giants, he twice had finished third in the NL in hitting, .319 in 1973 and .330 in 1976.

Personal/Misc:  Moved to a new home in suburban Philadelphia during the off-season...  Once again was active in numerous charitable fund raising activities primarily centered upon the Philadelphia Child Guidance Clinic...  Between 1968 and 1970, he spent a two-year hitch in the Army that included a tour in Viet Nam.

1980 Season:  Had career low batting average (.259), however his RBI total of 73 was just one less than his career high with the Phillies set in 1977...  Won his sixth consecutive Gold Glove with another outstanding defensive season...  Finished third in Total Chances behind Omar Moreno and Andre Dawson (he played 143 games- Dawson 147- Moreno 162)...  Had a 12-game hitting streak and batted .288 against the Eastern Division; hitting .347 vs. NY, .323 vs. Pitts. and .306 vs. Mtl....  Signed five-year contract early in the season at a Busch Stadium (St. Louis) news conference...  Big two-out hit tied game for Phils in 15th inning on 9/29 @ Vet vs. Cubs and Trillo's hit later in the inning won important game during pennant drive...  25 stolen bases was 2nd best on club.

1980 Post-Season:  His 10th inning double gave the Phillies a win in game number five of the LCS @ Houston and put the Phils in the World Series...  He batted .300 in the LCS and .227 in the WS.
