Mark Davis earned a September call-up because of a tremendous minor league season in Reading. Davis had gone 19-6 in AA in 1980, winning the Eastern League’s MVP award. His contributions to the Phillies in 1980 were minimal: relieving one game and starting the last game of the season to give the Phils’ staff a welcome break before the beginning of the NLCS against Houston. Davis never lived up to his vast potential in Philadelphia, but would achieve fleeting success in San Diego as a relief pitcher, winning the Cy Young Award in 1989 with a one-season outstanding performance before fading back into obscurity.

How Obtained: Phillies No. 1 selection in secondary phase of the 1979 January free agent draft; signed by Eddie Bockman.
Second-year pro and a real blue-chip pitching prospect… 185 strikeouts led ALL minor league pitchers… 19 wins second only to R. Eugene Nelson (20-3 at Ft. Lauderdale in Class A Florida State League) among minor leaguers…. Has two-year 30-15 won-lost record with nine shutouts… Recalled in September by the Phillies and relieved once and started last game of season in Montreal… Won Most Valuable Player Award in Eastern League as well as All-Star honors… Named to Topps Chewing Gum Class AA All-Star Team… “Finest young lefthanded pitcher that I have seen in a long time,” reported his Reading Manager Ron Clark… 1978 Granada High grad… Played Little League ball… Attended Chabot College… Phillies chose Mark in the 1979 draft instead of the highly-touted Bill Bordley, a pitcher from Southern Cal., who was signed by San Francisco.
