October 21, 1980 - WS Game 6 - Phillies 4, Royals 1

Tug McGraw rejoices as the Phils win their first World Championship.
Tug McGraw rejoices as the Phils win their first World Championship.

Phillies win series 4-2.

Game 6- truly a date with history. I can distinctively remember watching this game at my grandmother's house (I stayed there because I knew that she'd let me stay up!), and I was glued to her television. I was trying to be so quiet, as my grandfather was asleep on the couch, but when Tug McGraw struck out Wilson, I woke him up screaming and running and hopping around their house. Steve Carlton was dominating over the first six innings, while the Phils scored all the runs they would need on a Mike Schmidt 2-run single in the bottom of the third. Of course, with the Phillies and especially with Tug McGraw, it would not be easy. Tug faced two bases-loaded situations in the eighth and ninth innings, but crawled his way through the minefield and notched the most important strikeout in Phillies history- the one that earned them the franchise's first World Series title.
