Greg Luzinski breaks up a double play in the first inning.

Steve Carlton pitched another masterful performance, shutting the Cubs out for seven innings on four hits before allowing Dickie Noles to wrap up the shutout. Carlton walked eleven Cubs batters without walking a single one. Budding MVP candidate Mike Schmidt blasted not one, but two home runs in his favorite ballpark outside of Veterans Stadium. Lonnie Smith also scored two runs playing in the place of Bake McBride. The Phillies kept pace with the first place Pirates, who also won this day.
