Carlton Puts Stopper On Houston 3-0

PHILADELPHIA (UPI) – Mike Schmidt hits a three-run homer and Steve Carlton hurled a four-hit shutout Friday night to give the Philadelphia Phillies a 3-0 victory over the Houston Astros.

Schmidt connected after third-inning singles by Pete Rose and Bake McBride off loser Nolan Ryan, 2-4.  The homer was the 11th of the season for Schmidt and tied him with teammate Greg Luzinski as the National League leader.

Carlton held the Astros to four singles while becoming the first eight-game winner in the major leagues.  He has lost twice.   In recording his fourth complete game, Carlton struck out eight to raise his major league-leading total to 69 for the season while recording his 44th career shutout.

The Astros had runners at second and third with two out in the fourth inning when Terry Puhl beat out an infield hit, Cesar Cedeno walked and both advanced on a groundout.  But Carlton knocked down Jeff Leonard’s shot to the mound and threw the Houston outfielder (out) at first.
