A disastrous 5th inning cost Randy Lerch and the Phillies against the first-place Pittsburgh Pirates. For the second day in a row, the Phils jumped out to an early lead, but could not hold on. In that 5th inning, the Phillies committed three errors (Schmidt two, McBride one) as Randy Lerch gave up five unearned runs that put the defending world champions ahead for good in this game. Lerch did not finish the fifth inning, and was relieved in turn by Lerrin LaGrow, Kevin Saucier and Dan Larson. Don Robinson pitched the complete game for the Pirates, giving up eight hits and three earned runs over his nine innings of work. Bake McBride (1) and Bob Boone (2) knocked in the Phils' runs.
