July 27, 1980 - Phillies 17, Braves 4

Steve Carlton struggled, but still picked up his 16th win.
Steve Carlton struggled, but still picked up his 16th win.

The Phils' bats exploded on this Sunday afternoon after a long slumber. The Phils rocked starter Rick Matula for right hits and right runs over just 1-1/3 innings before Matula was lifted for reliever Preston Hanna. Garry Maddox led the fireworks with a triple and a single in four at-bats, knocking in five of the Phillies 17 runs on the game. Lonnie Smith went 3-for-6 and scored three runs, and every Phils starter except Manny Trillo (who only had two ABs before leaving the game after being hit by Hanna) had at least one hit, and every starter but Pete Rose (who scored two runs) had at least one RBI. The Phils' 17 runs were the most scored in a single game in 1980, while the 21 hits were the most in a nine-inning game (the Phils had 22 hits on August 21, a ten-inning 9-8 win vs. San Diego). The offensive onslaught made Steve Carlton a 16-game winner. Carlton gave up four runs in seven innings of work, and was followed by scoreless innings from Dickie Noles and Warren Brusstar.
