The Phils, fresh off the sweep of the Giants, came into Los Angeles in first place. They would stay there following the first game of the series, one in which Phils rookie Bob Walk bested Dodgers ace Jerry Reuss 3-2. Walk pitched seven innings of four-hit, one-run baseball, while Mike Schmidt hit his 36th home run and Greg Luzinski launched his 17th to power the Phils' three runs. Walk earned his 10th win of the season, finalized by Tug McGraw's 17th save of the year.
