September 28, 1980 - Montreal 8, Phillies 3

On the rubber game of a pivotal three-game home series against Montreal, the Expos took it to the Phils and reclaimed first place, placing what seemed like a devastating blow to the Phils' chances of claiming the division. Even though Bob Walk took the loss (his 7th), he didn't pitch that badly, giving up two runs in five innings. Walk was the victim of shoddy relief pitching, as Dickie Noles, Kevin Saucier and Randy Lerch each gave up runs in relief. Off all the Phillies' pitchers on this Sunday, only Ron Reed escaped his assignment unscathed (1 IP). Gary Carter especially had a great day, hitting two home runs and knocking in four of the Expos' eight runs on the day. As for the Phils, they only had five hits off of Steve Rogers, who pitched a complete game for Montreal. The three runs the Phils scored were knocked in by Larry Bowa (single), Bake McBride (double) and Mike Schmidt (sacrifice fly). The loss dropped the Phils behind Montreal again, and left fans wondering if this was the end of the line for the Phillies.

From "The World Champion Phillies and the Road to Victory"

The final game in the three-game weekend set on Sunday was all Carter and the Expos. Carter homered twice, drove in four runs as Montreal beat the Phillies 8-3.

The victory put the Expos back on top in the NL East again. They returned home for six games. The Phillies had seven games, four with Chicago at home and three in Montreal.

The entire 1980 season could very well boil down to that three-game showdown between the Phillies and Expos in Olympic Stadium.

Quotes

"I don't think we can worry whether they're (Expos) feeling the pressure. They've got a good club. We've just got to go out and play good, consistent baseball and let them worry about themselves." - Garry Maddox
