September 17, 1980 - Phillies 5, Pittsburgh 4

This may be the game that saved the Phillies' season. The Phils were playing the defending (but fading) World Champion Pirates, who had been giving the Phils' fits at different times. Going into this game, the Phils' record against Pittsburgh was a horrendous 6-11. In this game, the Phils had a 3-0 and a 4-1 lead, but starter Steve Carton allowed the Pirates to tie the game in the bottom of the seventh inning. However, Carlton, Tug McGraw and Sparky Lyle would hold the Bucs scoreless the rest of the way, and Garry Maddox ran the Phils into the victory, stealing both second and third base in the top of the 11th inning, scoring on Del Unser's single. McGraw picked up the second win of his season, and Lyle saved his first for the Phillies. Coupled with Montreal's loss to New York, the Phils crept back to 1½ games in back of the Expos.
