The Phils finally broke through against Cincinnati, winning 7-3 behind Dick Ruthven. In the game yesterday, the Phils hit three home runs and only scored three runs. In this game there was only one extra base hit, a double by Larry Bowa, and yet the Phils scored seven in the victory. The most exciting inning was the 7th, because of Charlie Hustle. Pete Rose walked to begin the inning, and then proceeded to steal second, third and home to score the Phils' sixth run of the game. Ruthven pitched seven innings, scattering 10 hits but only giving up two runs in earning his third victory.
