June 3, 1980 - Pittsburgh 4, Phillies 3

Vance Law is brushed back by a Dick Ruthven pitch in the 3rd inning.
Vance Law is brushed back by a Dick Ruthven pitch in the 3rd inning.

In one way, a heartbreaker: a Phils lead of 3-2 in the eighth became a 4-3 loss to the Pirates when the Bucs scored one in the eighth and one in the ninth to beat the Phillies. However, the score was not indicative of the game: the Pirates left 13 men on base, while the Phils only left 4, and therefore had many less opportunities to score than did the Pirates. Mike Schmidt hit his 18th home run of the season. Of interest is that Tug McGraw pitched 3-2/3 innings of relief. That is unheard of in today's era of complete specialization, when eyebrows are raised when the closer comes out in the 8th inning. Another interesting stat from this game is that McGraw gave FOUR intentional walks in this game. None of it was enough, however, to save Tug from his second loss of the season.
