July 21, 1980 - Cincinnati 5, Phillies 4

The fourth loss in a row put the Phillies down three games to Pittsburgh. Hard-luck lefty Randy Lerch was rocked for ten hits and five earned runs in his 6-2/3 innings of work as the Phils fell to the remnants fo the Big Red Machine, 5-4, in Cincinnati. Lerch took his 12th loss in 15 decisions. The Phils' lineup used many of the bench players, as Greg Gross, Del Unser, and Keith Moreland all got a start. Gross and Moreland got the most of their opportunity as they got two hits each, with Gross hitting a double and Moreland smashing his fourth homer of the year, which tied the game at 2 for the time being. The Phils actually took a momentary 3-2 lead in the sixth on Larry Bowa's single, but the Reds tied the game in thier half of the inning off of Lerch. Kevin Saucier pitched 1-1/3 innings of scoreless relief for Lerch, but gave up a single to Dan Driessen that scored two runs that were charged to Lerch. The game was also marked by two rain delays that totaled 70 minutes. It was after the second rain delay (56 minutes) that the Reds scored their two runs in the bottom of the seventh inning.
