Bill Madlock scores in the sixth inning.

The first-place Phillies went to battle against the defending World Champion Pirates, and this time came out on top. It was a back-and-forth affair, with the Phils holding leads of 1-0, 4-3 and the final score of 5-4, and the Pirates holding leads of 2-1 and 3-3, then tying the game 4-4 in the ninth inning. Mike Schmidt hit his 22nd homer of the season in the 2nd inning off Pirates' starter Jim Bibby. Steve Carlton pitched eight innings, giving up three earned runs and leaving with the lead. However, reliever Dickie Noles and Kevin Saucier blew the lead in the top of the ninth. The Phils came back to win the game in the bottom of the inning when a Bob Boone single scored Garry Maddox with the winning run.
