August 31, 1980 - San Diego 10, Phillies 3

Going into the final game of the series, the Phils once again had an opportunity to claim first place, and once again failed to do so. Bob Walk, after starting the year 6-0, had struggled, and on this day gave up five runs in 5-1/3 innings to take his fourth loss of the season, and Ron Reed did not provide much relief (five runs in 2-1/3 innings). Garry Maddox, popularly known as the Secretary of Defense for his stellar glove work, committed two errors that led to three unearned runs. The offense was not as bad as the second game of the August 30th double-header, but it was not enough to keep up with the runs that the Phils' pitching and defense gave up in this game. The lone Phil to have more than one hit was Bake McBride, and the Phils failed to get even one extra-base hit. Keith Moreland and Garry Maddox had the lone RBIs for the Phils (the third scored on an Eichelberger wild pitch). Due to the Pirates losing and the Expos losing a double-header, the Phils actually managed to gain ground, ending up tied for second, ½ game behind Pittsburgh.
