August 30, 1980 - Game 2 - San Diego 5, Phillies 1

Game 2 of the August 30 double-header against San Diego was an opportunity: win the game, claim first place. It was a possibility that would not have seemed possible a little more than two weeks earlier, after dropping four straight to Pittsburgh to fall six games behind the Pirates. Unfortunately, the Phils did not take advantage of this opportunity tonight, losing the game to the Padres 5-1, being held to four hits by John Curtis. Nino Espinosa did not pitch nearly that well, leaving in the fifth inning and being charged with five earned runs and eight hits in 4-1/3 innings. Even though Dickie Noles and Warren Brusstar held the fort after the big fifth inning, the Phils had no comeback on this night. The lone run was in the third inning, when a Pete Rose single scored Espinosa, who had the lone extra-base hit of the game (a double). The 3-6 slots of the Phils order (Mike Schmidt, Greg Luzinski, Keith Moreland and Garry Maddox) went a combined 0-for-15.
