Pete Rose passed Tris Speaker for 4th place on the all-time hits list.

The Phils outhit the Dodgers in the second game of the series, but the score was exactly the same as the first: Dodgers 8, Phillies 4. Bob Walk started for the Phils but could not get himself started, giving up five runs in 2-1/3 innings with seven hits and four walks. Randy Lerch was not much relief, giving up two more runs in 1-2/3 innings before Warren Brusstar came on to pitch two scoreless innings. Ron Reed gave up one in his inning of work, and Tug McGraw closed out the game for the Phils with a scoreless inning of relief. For the Dodgers, Rick Sutcliffe pitched 3-2/3 innings and could not claim the win with a 7-1 lead, giving up three runs in the fourth inning, before Joe Beckwith and Bobby Castillo came on for scoreless relief, with Castillo eventually being awarded his fourth win of the season. Mike Schmidt had two doubles, and Lonnie Smith, Bake McBride, Keith Moreland and Larry Bowa also had two hits each, but not enough could be strung together to bring the Phils back in this game. The Pirates lost again, so the Phils stayed 3½ games in back of Pittsburgh.
